Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome – virus directly transmitted by the deer mouse.  This disease occurs throughout most of North America.  It is spread by breathing in dust that is contaminated by deer mouse urine and droppings, having direct contact with deer mouse urine and or droppings, and being bitten by a deer mouse.

Leptospirosis –a bacteria that is directly transmitted by rodents.  It is prevalent worldwide.  Leptospirosis is spread by eating food or drinking water contaminated by infected rodent urine.  It can also be spread through skin or mucus contact with water or soil that is infected with rodent urine.

Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM) – virus directly transmitted by the common house mouse.  Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM) is prevalent worldwide.  It is spread by breathing in dust that is contaminated with house mouse urine and droppings, direct contact with house mouse urine and droppings, and getting bitten by a house mouse.

Rat-Bite Fever – bacteria directly transmitted by rats and possibly some mice.  Rat bite fever is spread by getting bitten or scratched by an infected rodent, contact with an infected dead rodent, and eating or drinking food or water that is contaminated with rat droppings.

Salmonellosis – bacteria that is directly transmitted by rats. Salmonellosis spreads by eating or drinking food or water that is contaminated by rat droppings.

Tularemia – bacteria that is directly transmitted by wild rodents including squirrels.  It is spread by handling infected animal carcasses, being bitten by an infected tick, eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and breathing in the contaminated bacteria.

This is just a list of directly transmitted disease rodents can spread in Connecticut.  They can also indirectly spread diseases like Lyme disease, Colorado Tick Fever, and West Nile Virus to name a few.
