Norway Rat

In Connecticut, the Norway Rat is also known as a sewer rat, brown rat, street rat, or a wharf rat.  Norway Rats are extremely destructive if you have them in your home or business.  The Norway rat also carries some nasty diseases you don’t want to come in contact with.  The Norway rat has thick, bristle-like fur with black coloring in spots along its upper body.  Norway rats have a lighter underbelly that is sometimes off white to yellowish in color.  A Norway rat can grow up to almost 16 inches long and weigh over 1 pound.  The Norway rat has small ears and eyes with its tail being smaller than its body.

Habits of the Norway Rat

Norway rats live in a colony or nest with other Norway rats, usually underground.  They make burrow holes as entrance and exit points into and out of the colony catacomb. Norway rats will usually burrow near building foundations, wood piles, areas that have a lot of garbage, and under concreted slabs.  The Norway rat can fit into an opening the size of a quarter.  They will also make nests in wall cavities.  They are a nocturnal animal, meaning they are most active at night.  If you see them during the day, it means you have a sizable rat infestation.  Norway rats have strong jaws and extremely sharp teeth.  They can chew through concrete mortar, led pipes, sheetrock, and wood.  The Norway rat will usually only travel 25 to 100 feet away from the colony. Female Norway rats can have up to 12 litters a with 4 to 22 babies in each litter.  This means a small Norway rat problem in your home or business can get out of control quite quickly.

What does the Norway Rat Eat?

The Norway rat is an omnivore, it will eat anything.  It is also a hunter that will track and kill other animals to eat.  Their main diet consists of proteins and carbohydrates but, they will eat vegetable, fruit, dry dog and cat food, carrion, and even other Norway rats if hungry enough.  The Norway rat is reliant on water to live.  It cannot survive with a minimal water intake.  The Norway rat needs at least an ounce of water a day to survive.
