A homeowner in Wallingford Connecticut recently called us because they were experiencing a very strong, pungent odor in their bedroom. They were looking for a mouse exterminator in Wallingford that could figure out where the dead mouse smell was coming from, how to get rid of it, and how to stop the mice from getting in.
As usual we were able to get there on the same day that the Wallingford couple called us, because it was getting close to Christmas and they were concerned the bad smell would ruin their Christmas dinner. Connecticut Termite and Pest Control, LLC does same day service at no extra charge. I pulled in the driveway, as usual, I take a good look at the garage door before entering the house. Yes I saw at least part of the problem on how the mice were getting in. There was a an opening the size of a half dollar on the bottom of the garage door.
As I entered the home in Wallingford for pest control I could definitely recognize the smell of at least one dead mouse. Later on I would uncover that it wasn’t dead mice but something else much more sinister. I asked the homeowners to lead me to their bedroom and to my surprise it was in the garage. Evidently they had remodeled the garage into a bedroom. They elevated the floor so there was about a 2 foot crawlspace under the bedroom. The smell was very evident in the bedroom. Looking around I noticed they had put a 5 foot hole in the sheetrock wall to try and find the dead animal.
I pulled out my trusty flashlight and got ready to enter the crawlspace to figure out exactly what and where this pest control issue was coming from. As I lifted the crawlspace trap door the smell was almost unbearable. Immediately I noticed rodent poison on the cement floor. Evidently they had a pest control company that thought poison was the best thing to do in order to get rid of mice, rats, and rodents. It’s not and we at Connecticut Termite and Pest Control, LLC only use rodent poison as a last resort. I also noticed they had put no traps down to try and catch the mice or rats.
Crawling around on my hands and knees I first inspected the garage door from the inside and found out it was sealed that the outside half dollar sized hole didn’t go all the way through to the inside of the home. As I was crawling around I started seeing half-dollar sized holes above the cinder block in the wall insulation. But by the looks of the holes animals weren’t burrowing in the house they were trying to get out. I also started seeing rat poop all over. It wasn’t mice it was rats in this Wallingford home.
I located where the dead rat or rats were. They had gnawed through the wood sill plate above the cinder blocks, looking to get out, and gotten trapped in the cinder block cavity. I had no way of accessing where the dead bodies were without making a hole in the foundation. In order to alleviate the bad smell I poured a bottle of Febreze into the hole. This helped to mask the smell until the dead bodies dried up.
After all this pest control detective work I deduced that the homeowners had sealed the rats up in the crawlspace of their new bedroom, their old pest control company was lazy and used poison as a first option in treating a rat problem, and the rats had died tying to get out of the house in search of water because the poison was killing them.
I picked up all the poison, got rid of it, put rat and mouse traps throughout the crawlspace, and will return in two weeks to seal up all the holes once I know the rodents are gone.
